AMAT Slides as Flat Q4 Margin Guidance Undercuts a Record Quarter

Applied Materials posted the largest sequential revenue jump in company history on August 13, beat on revenue and EPS, and guided fourth-quarter revenue and earnings above consensus. The market sold it anyway, because the company also guided gross margin flat at 50.4% into a quarter with roughly 12% more revenue. Lam Research and KLA barely moved on the same tape, which makes this an Applied-specific repricing rather than a chip-equipment selloff. The HIP-3 perp marks $507.40, sitting right on the after-hours print in the stock.

Mover Brief

The Margin Line Is the Whole Story

Strip out the noise and this selloff comes down to one line in the guidance. Applied reported fiscal Q3 revenue of $9.12 billion, up 25% year over year and 15% sequentially — the largest quarter-over-quarter jump in company history — alongside record non-GAAP EPS of $3.50, a 50.4% non-GAAP gross margin, 34.0% non-GAAP operating margin, and $2.33 billion of free cash flow. Q4 guidance landed at roughly $10.25 billion in revenue and $4.02 in non-GAAP EPS, both above consensus. On the income statement there is nothing to complain about.

The problem is that gross margin is guided flat at approximately 50.4% in Q4 even as revenue steps up another ~12% sequentially. CFO Brice Hill pinned the flat line on ramp headwinds — hiring customer support engineers and building manufacturing capacity to serve demand through 2028 — plus a heavier display mix, with display revenue now expected to average about $400 million per quarter through 2027, below what the company signaled a quarter earlier.

Those are defensible reasons. They also mark the first guided break in a streak of thirteen consecutive quarters of year-over-year gross margin expansion. For a stock that has been bid on operating leverage into an AI capex cycle, that is the number that mattered, and everything else in the release was secondary to it.

Priced for More Than a Beat

A beat-and-raise only works if the setup leaves room for one. AMAT went into the print up roughly 22% over the prior two weeks and tacked on another 4% the day before the release, after more than doubling on the year. That is positioning built for a blowout, not for a solid quarter with a soft margin line.

The rest of 2026 has been a whipsaw. The stock set its record high in late June, then fell roughly 41% peak-to-trough into a late-July low near $436 before the August rebound carried it back into the $500s. Management sold near the top of that range: insiders moved more than $65 million of stock in mid-June, with CEO Gary Dickerson accounting for roughly $42.6 million at prices between $590 and $600. That doesn't make the quarter worse. It does tell you where informed sellers marked risk-reward two months ago — about 16% above where this perp trades now.

The sell side hasn't capitulated. UBS carries a $705 target, raised from $570, leaving the Street stacked well above spot. That is the same configuration that has been wrong since the June top.

The Peers Didn't Follow

This is the tell that it's an Applied problem, not a sector problem. On the same premarket tape, Lam Research fell just 0.9% and KLA was flat. If the market were repricing AI capex, the whole wafer-fab-equipment complex would have gone down together. It didn't — which rules out the easy macro explanation.

The industry backdrop actually improved. Dickerson raised Applied's calendar 2026 semiconductor equipment growth outlook to more than 30%, and the deck guides advanced packaging revenue to grow more than 70% this year, with leading-edge foundry-logic, DRAM and advanced packaging driving roughly 80% of WFE growth. Lam CEO Tim Archer separately put 2026 WFE spending in the low $150 billion range, up from a prior $140 billion. Hill described eight-quarter detailed forecasts shared with suppliers and roughly five years of visibility with the largest customers.

So the bear case isn't demand — it's share and mix. Morgan Stanley flagged that the revenue guide implies slower systems shipment growth, and UBS pointed at sequential deceleration. The question the tape asked was whether Applied is growing with the market or faster than it. Flat margins into a record revenue quarter is not the answer that settles it.

What Actually Matters From Here

Three things worth tracking.

China keeps shrinking as a share of the mix, down to roughly 28% of sales from about 35% a year earlier under export controls. Management told the call it expects China revenue to rise in absolute terms this calendar year on 28nm foundry-logic investment, so the percentage decline is dilution from faster non-China growth rather than a collapse. Still a line to watch, particularly after Applied agreed in February to pay $252.5 million to settle Commerce Department allegations covering 56 shipments of ion implanters routed through its Korean subsidiary to SMIC — the second-largest penalty the Bureau of Industry and Security has ever levied.

Second, the margin trajectory. Thirteen straight quarters of year-over-year gross margin expansion is a large part of why this multiple exists. Whether Q4's flat guide is a one-quarter ramp cost or the front edge of a plateau is the single biggest input into the next re-rating, in either direction.

Third, the perp itself. The HIP-3 market marks $507.40 on $9.5 million of 24-hour volume — roughly nine times what it turned over during July's rebound, so the earnings event genuinely pulled flow in. The 9.39% decline measures from about $560, where the perp traded Thursday ahead of the release, down to a level that sits essentially on the $506.51 after-hours print in the stock. That's a clean earnings gap being tracked accurately, not a thin-book overshoot — the reason it reads deeper than the "down 5%" headlines is simply that those anchor to Thursday's close.
