CL Snaps Back to $103.90 as Twin Hormuz Strikes and Project Freedom Reignite the Risk Premium

WTI crude reversed Sunday's dovish OPEC+ reaction overnight, lifting CL 4.71% in 11 hours to $103.90 after two commercial vessels were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz inside an eight-hour window. Trump's announcement of Project Freedom, a US Navy escort operation that begins Monday, set up the kinetic confrontation the tape had been pricing out a day earlier. With Hormuz still effectively closed and OPEC+'s June quota hike admittedly paper, the risk premium that faded into the weekend snapped right back.

Mover Brief

The Reversal

Sunday afternoon, CL was bid lower into the OPEC+ headline — $100.70 with Saudi Arabia and six partners signing off on a 188,000 bpd June quota hike at the first ministerial meeting without the UAE. Pair that with Iran routing a 14-point peace proposal to Washington through Pakistan and the tape briefly bought the dovish read.

It did not last. Eleven hours later CL prints $103.90, +4.71% on the move, after two commercial vessels were attacked near Hormuz overnight and Trump greenlit a US Navy escort operation that starts at the Monday open. The flip is the entire trade: every dovish input from Sunday — the OPEC quota, the Pakistan-routed proposal, the rumored opening of Hormuz — was either cosmetic or contingent on Iran not shooting at ships. Iran (or proxies in the area) shot at ships.

Twin Strikes off Sirik and Fujairah

The first incident hit Sunday afternoon: a bulk carrier attacked by multiple small craft 11 nautical miles west of Sirik, Iran, reported by UKMTO with all crew safe. Iran's Fars news framed it as a routine documentation stop, which is the standard cover.

Roughly eight hours later, an oil tanker was struck by unknown projectiles about 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah, near Oman's Musandam Peninsula. Two hits in the same corridor inside a single watch is not a coincidence and the market did not treat it as one. These are the first confirmed strikes in the area since April 22 — the lull was the dovish input that just got invalidated.

Project Freedom Sets Up the Showdown

Sunday night Trump announced Project Freedom, a US military escort operation to move the roughly 800 commercial vessels stranded behind the Iranian blockade out of the Persian Gulf. CENTCOM disclosed the force composition: guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms and 15,000 service members, with the President warning that any interference would be 'dealt with forcefully.'

This is the binary the tape now has to price. If escorts move freely, Hormuz starts breathing again and the risk premium bleeds. If the IRGC tests the perimeter — and the timing of Sunday's twin attacks suggests they were already setting markers — the next headline is a kinetic exchange between the US Navy and Iranian small craft inside the world's most important oil chokepoint. Neither path is dovish for short-dated oil.

What's Priced In

The OPEC+ June increase is mostly cosmetic. Saudi Arabia's new quota of 10.291 million bpd sits roughly 2.5 million above its actual March production of 7.76 million bpd, which means the headline barrel count overstates what physically clears. With Hormuz still throttled, even a willing producer cannot move incremental cargoes the way a normal cycle would.

The broader tape backs that read. Brent printed $110.95 and WTI $99.72 on May 4, with the WTI-Brent spread reflecting the seaborne disruption asymmetry. CL on Hyperliquid trading $103.90 is consistent with that complex once you account for funding and the perp's tendency to lead spot on geopolitical impulse moves. Watch the first 48 hours of Project Freedom: a quiet escort run is the bear case from here, anything that looks like contact is the bull case.
