IP Perp Rips 53% on Hyperliquid While ICP Spot Sits Flat at $2.61

The hyna-deployed IP perpetual on Hyperliquid printed a 52.9% gain in six hours, but ICP spot barely moved. With open interest under $5,000 and daily volume in the low single-digit thousands, the IP perp is one of the thinnest books on the platform. This is a market microstructure event, not a fundamental repricing of Internet Computer.

Mover Brief

The Dislocation

The IP perpetual — a HIP-3 builder-deployed market tracking Internet Computer — moved 52.9% in six hours on March 14. But ICP spot on major exchanges like Binance and Upbit traded sideways around $2.61, down 3.8% on the day. The perp is currently priced at $1.20, less than half of ICP's actual spot price.

This kind of divergence is the signature of an illiquid HIP-3 market. Bullpen data shows the IP perp carrying roughly $5,000 in open interest and comparable daily volume. At that scale, a single four-figure trade can produce double-digit percentage moves. The 53% candle looks dramatic on a chart, but it likely represents a few thousand dollars changing hands against an empty order book.

Why the Book Is Empty

HIP-3 markets are permissionless — any builder who stakes 500,000 HYPE can deploy a perp for any asset. The tradeoff is that deployers are responsible for their own liquidity, oracles, and risk parameters. As Bankless noted, the lion's share of Hyperliquid's volume concentrates in five major markets like BTC, ETH, and SOL. Smaller HIP-3 listings are left with minimal natural flow.

The IP perp, deployed by hyna, sits firmly in this long tail. Hyperliquid's native markets now carry $1.2 billion in total HIP-3 open interest, but that figure is dominated by equity index, commodity, and large-cap crypto contracts. The IP market captures a negligible fraction of that.

ICP's Actual Fundamentals

While the perp move is noise, ICP itself has had a busy March. On March 11, Upbit listed ICP with KRW, BTC, and USDT pairs, triggering a 16-20% spot pump that took the token to $2.90 before it retraced to the current $2.60 range.

The bigger narrative is Mission 70, DFINITY's proposal to slash ICP inflation by 70% — from 9.72% annually to 2.92% — through a combination of supply-side reward cuts and demand-side burn acceleration. ICP gained 25% in the week following the announcement. Developer activity has also picked up, with 4,400 monthly active developers building on the network and a new sovereign cloud initiative signed with Pakistan in February.

None of these fundamentals explain the perp's 53% move. They do explain why someone might have market-bought into a near-empty book — residual bullish sentiment meeting zero liquidity.

What to Watch

The key question is whether the IP perp can attract enough liquidity to become a useful price discovery tool, or whether it remains a ghost market prone to random dislocations. At $5,000 in open interest, it is functionally untradeable for anything beyond micro-sized positions.

For ICP exposure, the spot market at $2.61 with $69 million in daily volume is the relevant venue. The perp's $1.20 price — a 54% discount to spot — tells you everything about the state of this particular book. If the deployer doesn't improve liquidity provision, these phantom moves will keep happening and they will keep meaning nothing.
