Samsung Promised a Record Payout Without a Buyback Number, and KORU Took 3x the Hit

Samsung Electronics approved the largest shareholder return package in Korean corporate history on Friday, then fell 8.70% on Monday because the package named a 30 trillion won dividend and pushed the buyback size to a January board meeting. SK hynix had already committed to repurchasing and cancelling 40 trillion won of stock five days earlier, which set the bar Samsung failed to clear. The Kospi closed down 3.12% at 6,696.96 on 5 trillion won of foreign and institutional selling, and KORU, built to return three times the daily move in an index Samsung dominates, closed down 7.86%. The Hyperliquid perp went further and printed a 12.44% loss over 24 hours.

Mover Brief

Samsung Named the Dividend and Skipped the Buyback

Samsung's board approved a 2026 shareholder return of 90 to 110 trillion won on Friday, the largest package any Korean company has ever put forward and roughly five times the previous domestic record of 20.3 trillion won set in 2020. On the headline it is enormous. On the details it is a dividend.

About 30 trillion won of that is cash dividends, including the regular third-quarter payout. The exact dividend structure goes to a late-October board meeting, and the split between additional dividends and buybacks followed by cancellation gets settled at a January 2027 board meeting, after full-year results are final. That is a five-month gap between the press release and the number that actually shrinks the share count.

The one repurchase Samsung did commit to is not a shareholder return at all. A separate 15 trillion won purchase of 53,285,968 common shares, running on the open market from August 24 to November 21 through Samsung Securities, Shinhan and KB, funds employee stock compensation. Those shares go into treasury, not into the shredder. Samsung started buying Monday — the same session the stock fell 8.70% to 257,000 won.

SK hynix Set the Bar Five Days Earlier

The context was set on August 19. SK hynix's board approved a 40 trillion won ($28.6 billion) repurchase with full cancellation — about 24.07 million shares, or 3.3% of shares outstanding — executing over roughly three months from August 20, alongside a policy of returning more than 50% of cumulative free cash flow across 2025 to 2027. Buy and burn, with a start date attached.

Samsung runs the same 50%-of-free-cash-flow framework but structured the announcement in the opposite order: size first, mechanism later. KB Securities had floated returns as high as 200 trillion won, and Morgan Stanley called the actual package "slightly below" recent investor expectations. When the whisper is 200 and the print is 90 to 110 with the buyback marked TBD, a record becomes a disappointment.

Monday's tape was one-sided. Foreign investors sold a net 3.69 trillion won and institutions another 1.29 trillion won, with retail absorbing 3.32 trillion won of it. Samsung closed down 8.70% at 257,000 won, SK hynix down 3.41% at 1,671,000 won, and the Kospi down 3.12% at 6,696.96. The Kosdaq, which holds none of this, closed up 1.42%. This was not a Korea selloff. It was a Samsung selloff wearing Korea's index.

The Perp Overshot the Fund It References

KORU is built to deliver 300% of the daily move in the MSCI Korea 25/50 Index, where Samsung is the largest single holding and the 25/50 methodology caps any one issuer at 25% of the index. Three times the Kospi's -3.12% is roughly -9.4%. The fund closed at $18.76, down 7.86% on 22.2 million shares — short of the full 3x, because the index it tracks is not the Kospi and its official day is struck at the NYSE close, not Seoul's.

The Hyperliquid perp ran a different clock and a bigger number. At $18.43 it is down 12.44% over 24 hours, which puts it near $21 a day earlier — above Friday's $20.36 ETF close, marked up while Seoul was still opening. It then paid twice, unwinding that markup and eating three times the session on top. At $18.43 the perp now sits about 1.8% below Monday's NYSE close, which is the market discounting Tuesday's Seoul open before either venue reopens.

The overshoot has a liquidity explanation. The perp turned over $12.1 million in 24 hours on this HIP-3 market. The ETF itself traded 22.2 million shares, call it $430 million of notional the same day. A satellite that thin, wrapped around a 3x fund, wrapped around a foreign index that is roughly a fifth one stock, will overshoot in both directions. Anyone who watched KORU print -24.21% on August 18 after a holiday markup already knows the pattern.

What Wednesday Changes

Nvidia reports fiscal Q2 after the close on August 26, with consensus near $91 billion in revenue. Some of Monday's selling was position-trimming into that print rather than a verdict on Samsung, and it cuts both ways: Samsung and SK hynix are the memory leg of the same AI capex trade, and Korea's index has no way to express a Nvidia beat except through them.

The Samsung-specific overhang has a calendar. Late October fixes the dividend, January fixes the buyback. Between now and then the stock trades on HBM pricing and Nvidia's guidance rather than on capital returns — and KORU trades on three times whatever that produces, with a perp on top that has already shown it will front-run the Seoul open in either direction.
