MSTR Reclaims $100 as Strategy Sells Stock and Skips Bitcoin
MSTR reclaimed the $100 line on Hyperliquid, up 7.08% over 24 hours to around $101.20, on a day Bitcoin barely moved from the low-$64,000s. It reads as a high-beta proxy bounce, not new information — and it lands the same week Strategy disclosed it sold $263.5 million of its own stock and bought zero Bitcoin. The flywheel that made MSTR work has flipped into reverse, with the mNAV premium gone and the treasury sitting underwater against a $75,476 average cost. Treat the reclaim as beta, not a bottom.
Mover Brief
A 7% Reclaim on a Flat Bitcoin Day
The MSTR perp pushed back above the $100 line, up 7.08% over 24 hours to roughly $101.20, even though Bitcoin barely moved, holding the low-$64,000s into July 20. That gap is the whole story. MSTR is a leveraged Bitcoin proxy, and a 7% move on a day the coin gained a fraction of a percent is beta doing its job, not new information. It's also the third time in three weeks this stock has fought the $100 level — it reclaimed the handle in early July, gave the entire reclaim back on July 7 down to $96.79, and is now testing it again from the other side. With only about $17M in 24h volume on this specific perp, the book is thin enough that the tape travels fast in both directions.
The Flywheel Is Running in Reverse
Here is what makes the bounce awkward: Strategy is no longer feeding the machine that made MSTR a Bitcoin proxy in the first place. In its latest weekly update, the company disclosed that it sold 2,732,318 of its own shares for $263.5 million between July 13 and 19 and bought zero Bitcoin, lifting its USD reserve to $3.225 billion while the stack held flat at 843,775 BTC. The original flywheel — issue stock at a premium to net asset value, spend the cash on more Bitcoin, repeat — only works when the equity trades above the value of the coins. It doesn't anymore. Strategy's mNAV premium has collapsed below 1, so the company has flipped from accumulation to defense, raising cash under a new capital framework rather than adding coins. Selling your own stock to sit in dollars is the exact inverse of the trade that carried MSTR to its highs.
What the Bounce Doesn't Fix
A 7% pop does not repair the balance sheet. With Bitcoin in the low-$64,000s against an average cost near $75,476 per coin, the treasury is underwater — roughly $9 billion in paper losses on the position. The preferred stack is the pressure point: STRC has traded at a discount to its $100 par even as the dividend obligations across Strategy's preferreds climb toward roughly $900 million a year, a bill that gets harder to service precisely when the common can't be issued at a premium. Benzinga summed the two-week stretch bluntly: more than $730M raised, no Bitcoin bought, and an open question about whether MSTR can even hold the mid-$90s. The next real test is the July 30 earnings report, where Strategy formalizes the multibillion-dollar mark-to-market hit already flagged for the second quarter. Until then, the $100 reclaim is beta, not a bottom.
