NBIS Falls to $239.50 as Meta's Neocloud Entry Meets a Stretched Valuation

The HIP-3 NBIS perp is down 16.91% over 23 hours to $239.50, extending the reversal that began when Bloomberg reported Meta is building a cloud business to resell its excess AI compute. That report drops Nebius's single largest customer directly into the neocloud lane, but the depth of the drop is a valuation story as much as a competitive one. NBIS had run more than 200% in 2026 to a $299.86 record at roughly 19.4x forward sales, with insiders net sellers into the move, leaving almost no cushion when the category re-rated. A sector-wide headline found the most crowded, richly-priced long in it.

Mover Brief

The Meta Compute Shock

The reversal has a single trigger. Bloomberg reported that Meta is building a cloud computing business, internally dubbed Meta Compute, to monetize its excess AI capacity — both by selling access to hosted models (an AWS Bedrock-style layer, including its own Muse Spark models) and, potentially, raw bare-metal compute. Bare-metal GPU rental is the exact business Nebius is built on, so the report drops one of the largest AI spenders on the planet straight into the neocloud lane.

The hit was never Nebius-specific. CoreWeave fell in sympathy on the same report as traders repriced the entire independent-GPU-cloud category at once. What makes the number so large on NBIS is not the headline itself — it's the stock that headline landed on.

A Stock Primed to Fall

NBIS came into July as one of the most stretched momentum names in the AI complex. The stock had run more than 200% in 2026 to a $299.86 record, carrying a roughly $69.5 billion market cap into the print. At about 19.4x forward sales with insiders as net sellers over the past year, there was almost no valuation cushion to absorb a sentiment shock — a risk Seeking Alpha had flagged weeks earlier around the funding gap behind its 2026 revenue guidance.

The perp fell harder than a clean category re-rate would justify because it was also unwinding a crowded long. Price had been grinding toward $300 on a short-squeeze-plus-Nasdaq-100-inclusion bid just a day earlier; when the catalyst hit, that positioning had to come out fast. A high-multiple stock at a record, on stale longs, with insiders selling into it, is exactly the setup that turns a sector headline into a 17% single-name drawdown.

What's Intact, What's Now in Question

The core contract still stands. Nebius's five-year deal with Meta worth up to $27 billion — $12 billion of dedicated Vera Rubin capacity from early 2027 plus up to $15 billion Meta committed to backstop, per the company's own announcement — hasn't changed. What changed is the framing: the anchor customer underwriting the bull case is now also a would-be competitor, and Meta's estimated $125–$145 billion 2026 infrastructure budget dwarfs anything the independents can put up.

The question the market now has to answer is whether Meta Compute is a real product or a headline — and Nebius doesn't get to respond with numbers until its next earnings in early August. Until then, NBIS trades as a proxy for how durable the neocloud moat really is, and every hyperscaler capacity headline cuts both ways.
