PURRDAT Rips 37% on One Trump Sentence — and Still Trades Below Its Own HYPE Stack
President Trump said at a White House crypto meeting that CFTC Chair Mike Selig is working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States "in a fully compliant and legal fashion." HYPE jumped 19% and Hyperliquid Strategies stock posted its largest one-day gain on record, closing up 30.42% at $9.39 before the HIP-3 perp pushed to $9.666 in after-hours pricing. But PURR does not own the exchange — it is a treasury company that holds and stakes HYPE, so the only transmission channel is net asset value. On that math the equity still changes hands at roughly 0.72x the HYPE it holds, meaning the move compressed a discount rather than building a premium.
Mover Brief
One Sentence at 3 P.M.
The whole move traces to a single line. At a White House crypto gathering on Wednesday afternoon, Trump said he understood that CFTC Chair Mike Selig "is also working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion". Selig sat alongside SEC Chair Paul Atkins and White House crypto advisor Patrick Witt, a day before the inaugural meeting of the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee.
The tape did the rest. HYPE trades at $69.73, up 19.2% on the day and 24.4% on the week, about 9% under its $76.70 record from June 16. PURR closed at $9.39, up 30.42% on 61.7 million shares — the largest single-day gain in the company's history — extending its year-to-date run past 163%. Options desks were louder than the tape: traders bought 104,320 calls, roughly 416% above average daily volume, and listed-exchange names sold off in sympathy, with Cboe down 3.5%, MIAX down 3.1% and CME down 1.7%.
Worth stating plainly, because the price action will not: nothing was approved. There is no filing, no registration, no timeline, and Hyperliquid's front end still blocks US IP addresses. Trump described a process, not a permission. What the market bought was the removal of a tail risk — the assumption that the largest offshore perps venue would stay permanently fenced off from US flow — not a new revenue line.
The Wrapper Is Not the Exchange
A lot of Wednesday's commentary treated PURR as the listed version of Hyperliquid. It is not. Hyperliquid Strategies is a digital-asset treasury company whose entire business is accumulating HYPE and staking it. It collects no exchange fees, owns no order book, and would not directly bill a single dollar if a US-compliant Hyperliquid launched tomorrow. The only wire from Trump's sentence to PURR's share price runs through the token: HYPE up, treasury up, equity up.
Which makes the ratio the interesting part. HYPE gained 19.2%. PURR gained 30.42%. Equity beat the asset by more than ten points, and the reason is that the wrapper started the day cheap. The company held roughly 23.7 million HYPE as of June, against about $103 million of cash and no debt as of its last reported balance sheet. At $69.73 that stack is worth roughly $1.65 billion; add the cash and call it $1.76 billion against 134.6 million shares, or about $13.05 per share. At $9.39 the stock is near 0.72x that number. Run the same math on Tuesday's prices and it was closer to 0.65x. The discount narrowed. It did not disappear.
Treat those figures as a floor with a date stamp — the token count is a June disclosure and the cash figure is older still — but the direction is not ambiguous. This was not a re-rating of a business. It was a leveraged discount closing a few points on a headline.
The HIP-3 perp is doing the honest work here. PURRDAT at $9.666 sits about 2.9% above the $9.39 cash close, tracking the $9.86 after-hours print rather than the bell. That is the actual function of a 24/7 perp on a Nasdaq name: price discovery after the exchange goes dark. Just size it correctly — $24.2 million of perp volume against roughly $550 million of notional in the cash market means the equity leads and the perp follows.
The $9.375 Line and August 27
One number matters more than the percentage move. Hyperliquid Strategies has 35,156,660 shares registered for resale by Rorschach Advisors LLC — 7,761,860 already issued plus 27,394,800 issuable on advisor warrants split evenly across strikes of $9.375, $12.50 and $18.75. Together that block is about 17.9% of shares outstanding as of June 15, and the filing itself warns the sales could cause a significant decline in the trading price.
We flagged that overhang in July when the perp was at $8.04 and the warrants were comfortably worthless. They are not worthless anymore. The $9.375 tranche — roughly 9.13 million shares — just crossed into the money on Wednesday's close, and PURRDAT at $9.666 is trading through it. The warrants carry cashless exercise, so the company sees no proceeds, and every point of upside from here drags a live supply source behind it. Even on the harshest assumption — all 27.4 million warrant shares issued, zero cash in — NAV per share only falls to about $10.84, still above where the perp trades. The dilution is real and the discount is bigger.
The next hard data point is close. Hyperliquid Strategies hosts its webcast for the fiscal year ended June 30 on Thursday, August 27 at 8:00 a.m. ET. That is the first audited token count since June and the first chance to replace the estimate above with a disclosed figure. If the stack grew, the 0.72x gets cheaper. If management used the strength to issue against the warrant strikes, the story flips to supply. Either way, an eight-day gap between a regulatory headline and a fiscal-year close is a narrow window for a stock that just printed its biggest day ever on no change to its own balance sheet.
