SKHX Falls as an Asia-Wide Chip Rout Slams SK Hynix's Seoul Leg

SKHX is down about 9.25% over 24 hours to roughly $1,270, but the driver isn't company news — it's a regional semiconductor selloff that dropped SK Hynix's Seoul-listed common nearly 11% and tripped the KOSPI's 37th sidecar of the year. The perp tracks that Seoul leg, which is still carrying the July 13 downgrade that cut Q2 profit estimates on locked HBM contract pricing. It also remains more than 20% cheaper than the new Nasdaq ADR, keeping it the pressured side of the trade. Preliminary Q2 results later this month are the next real test.

Mover Brief

The Overnight Rout

This is a macro move, not a headline about the company. SK Hynix's Seoul-listed common — the leg this perp tracks — fell close to 11% on July 16, part of a broad Asia semiconductor selloff that followed overnight losses in US chips and tripped the KOSPI's 37th sidecar of 2026. It wasn't isolated: Samsung Electronics dropped 7.33% in the same session, and Japanese names from Advantest to Tokyo Electron sold off alongside. The proximate cause was renewed AI-trade angst in US semiconductors — custom-silicon competition and valuation worries hit the sector into the close, and Asia opened straight into the fallout.

Why the July 13 Downgrade Still Bites

Sitting underneath today's tape is a company-specific overhang that hasn't cleared. On July 13, SK Hynix posted its worst single-session decline on record, down 15.4% in Seoul, after Korea Investment & Securities cut its Q2 operating-profit estimate to roughly 60.4 trillion won — about 8% below the ~65 trillion consensus. The argument was narrow but pointed: long-term HBM supply contracts lock pricing, so SK Hynix isn't fully capturing the spot DRAM and NAND price gains this quarter — the broker trimmed its blended DRAM ASP assumption from +50% quarter-over-quarter to +28.9%. It framed the revision as realistic modeling rather than weakening demand, but the market read it as a ceiling on the AI-memory earnings story, and that read is still setting the tone.

Seoul's Discount to Its Own ADR

The wrinkle that makes SKHX distinct is that it follows the Seoul common, not the Nasdaq ADR that debuted July 10. That listing — where SK Hynix raised about $26.5 billion in the largest foreign debut on US exchanges — priced at $149 and opened near $170, with each ADR equal to one-tenth of a Seoul share. After the Seoul crash, the two lines diverged into a discount of more than 20%, leaving the Korea-listed stock as the cheaper, more heavily sold leg as capital rotated into the fresh US line. As long as that spread holds, the leg SKHX tracks stays the pressured side of the trade.

What to Watch

The next hard catalyst is preliminary Q2 results, due later in July, which will test whether the KIS profit cut was too aggressive or roughly right. Two things frame the setup from here: HBM4 mass production is now guided to the third quarter, removing a chunk of the Q2 upside analysts had been pricing, and the Seoul-to-ADR spread remains the cleanest gauge of whether money keeps leaving the leg this perp follows. On the venue itself, the HIP-3 market turned over roughly $836 million in 24-hour perp volume, so positioning stays active even as the underlying whips around on macro flows.
