SKHX Climbs 8.75% as Traders Front-Run SK Hynix's Seoul Reopen and a 24% ADR Gap

SKHX tracks SK Hynix's Seoul-listed common shares, and it climbed about 8.75% over the weekend into Monday's Korean market reopen. The driver isn't fresh company news — it's the roughly 24% premium the company's new Nasdaq ADRs are carrying over the frozen Seoul shares, a gap the perp front-ran while Korea was closed. Behind it sits a violent fortnight: a record $26.5 billion U.S. listing, the stock's worst single day in history, a surprise Bank of Korea rate hike, and an HSBC vote of confidence off the lows. The convergence gets its real test on July 29, when two-way ADR conversion opens alongside Q2 earnings.

Mover Brief

The Weekend Convergence Bet

SKHX isn't a bet on SK Hynix's flashy new Nasdaq ticker — its oracle prices one Seoul-listed 000660 common share converted from won to dollars. That distinction is the entire weekend trade. When Korea closed Friday, the company's Nasdaq ADRs (SKHY) were carrying roughly a 24% premium over the Seoul shares — about $154 on the receipt against ₩1,842,000 in Seoul — and the Korean price feeding the oracle sat frozen at that Friday close all weekend.

Perps don't wait for the opening bell. With the underlying pinned, traders marked SKHX up about 8.75% to roughly $1,254, front-running the idea that Monday's Seoul session gaps up toward the premium its own U.S. receipts are already paying. It's a convergence bet expressed on the one venue that trades the name around the clock. The risk is symmetric and worth stating plainly: the gap can just as easily close with the ADR falling to Seoul as with Seoul rising to the ADR.

A Fortnight of Whiplash

None of this happens without the most violent two weeks in the stock's history. SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion in the largest-ever U.S. IPO by a foreign company and popped 13% on its July 10 Nasdaq debut, only for the Seoul line to post its worst single day on record, down 15.4% days later as the ADR premium pulled attention and liquidity toward the U.S. listing.

Then the macro hit. The Bank of Korea ended a three-year freeze with a surprise 25bp hike to 2.75%, tripping a KOSPI circuit breaker as an AI-chip export boom pushed inflation above 3%. Shares steadied only after HSBC reaffirmed SK Hynix as its top chip pick and the stock bounced roughly 8% off a 52-week low. The weekend grind higher in SKHX reads as a continuation of that Friday bounce plus the convergence positioning — not a fresh headline.

July 29 Is the Real Test

The premium is a structural quirk, not a permanent feature. It exists because the initial listing allowed ADR-to-share conversion but throttled new issuance the other way — a one-way valve that let the U.S. receipts float above Seoul. That valve opens on July 29, when two-way conversion goes live and lets arbitrageurs collapse the gap, the same day SK Hynix reports Q2 earnings.

That combination is what actually settles where SKHX trades. The bull case rests on real fundamentals: SK Hynix held around 58% of HBM revenue in Q1 and is the swing supplier for AI accelerators, and Korean semiconductor exports ran near +200% year-on-year in June. But fixed-price HBM contracts cap how much of the AI-memory crunch shows up in this quarter's print. Until conversion and the earnings line up, the perp is mostly trading positioning and the FX-adjusted spread to a stock that can't open until Monday.
