SKHX Drops 4.7% as China's Kimi K3 Revives the AI-Capex Demand Scare

SKHX fell 4.72% over 24 hours to about $1,194, tracking SK Hynix's 4.23% drop in Seoul to 1,764,000 won. The move wasn't company-specific: Chinese lab Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 open-source model, and the market read it as a fresh reason to doubt the returns on massive AI infrastructure spending — and the high-bandwidth memory demand underneath it. The close pushed roughly 295,000 SK Hynix retail holders into loss territory for the first time in two months, nine days before the company's July 29 Q2 earnings call.

Mover Brief

The Catalyst: A Chinese Model Reopens the Capex Question

SKHX fell 4.72% over 24 hours to about $1,194, tracking a 4.23% drop in SK Hynix's Seoul-listed shares to 1,764,000 won. The trigger wasn't company-specific — it was a demand scare imported from China. Beijing-based Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, described as one of the world's top-performing open-source models, and the market read it the way it read DeepSeek in early 2025: if capable models keep getting cheaper, the returns on hundreds of billions in AI infrastructure spend look shakier — and so does the high-bandwidth memory demand that has made SK Hynix the best-performing large-cap memory name of this cycle.

A second signal landed the same week. TSMC printed record earnings but guided capex higher, which traders read as a supply signal rather than a demand vote of confidence, feeding the profit-taking. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had already dropped 4.29% on July 16, and that weakness flowed straight into the Korean session, where the KOSPI closed down close to 4%.

From Debut Premium to Loss Territory

The bigger picture is a stock giving back one of the most violent re-ratings of the year. SK Hynix is down roughly 33% in July, with Samsung off about 27%, according to tallies of the month's damage. Much of that unwound the euphoria around the company's July Nasdaq debut, after which the Seoul line fell 15.4% in a single session on July 13 — its worst day on record — as the cross-listing premium collapsed and a domestic brokerage flagged that HBM prices were rising more slowly than conventional memory.

July 20 pushed the pain onto retail. The close under 1.8 million won was the first in about two months, and it dropped roughly 295,000 individual investors below their average purchase price of 1,811,094 won — a psychologically loaded level for a name Korean retail piled into on the way up. SKHX, which tracks one share of the common stock converted from won to dollars, carries all of that directly to the perp.

The July 29 Line in the Sand

None of this resolves before month-end. SK Hynix has set its Q2 2026 earnings call for July 29 at 9:00 a.m. Seoul time, and that print is now the event the whole complex is positioning around. The bull case still rests on HBM pricing and AI-datacenter demand holding up; the Kimi K3 reaction is the market pre-registering its doubt.

For perp traders, the setup is clean if uncomfortable: SKHX is the dollar-denominated way to express a view on a Korean memory maker whose own retail base just went underwater, nine days before a catalyst that either validates the demand thesis or confirms the de-rate. Until then, moves like today's say less about SK Hynix's own numbers and more about how the market prices the durability of the entire AI-capex trade — a debate that is now being set in Beijing as much as in Icheon.
