The Catalyst: TSMC Spent Its Way Into a Selloff

The selloff didn't start with SK Hynix — it started in Taiwan. TSMC posted record second-quarter profit, its fifth straight record quarter and a clean beat on both revenue and EPS. Then it raised 2026 capital spending to $60–64 billion, roughly a 15% bump, and flagged that ramping overseas fabs would dilute gross margins by two to four points over the next several years.

In a tape already nervous about the durability of the AI-capex cycle, that guidance read as a warning rather than a flex: if the most efficient foundry on earth has to spend this much more just to keep up, the whole complex is carrying a lot of forward margin it hasn't earned yet. TSM shares dipped despite the beat, and the selling refused to stay contained to logic chips.

The Cascade Into Seoul

By the US close the damage had spread across memory and storage. Micron fell about 8%, Marvell dropped 7.3%, Intel lost 4.4%, and AMD and Lam Research each shed roughly 3%, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF off 2.2%.

Overnight the rout rolled into Asia. SK Hynix's Seoul shares sank about 11%, Samsung Electronics fell 7.3%, and the KOSPI dropped more than 5%, tripping its 19th sell-side sidecar of the year — the index's 37th sidecar trigger of 2026, against just six total from 2000 through 2025. Japan's AI-adjacent names went with it: Advantest down 6%, SoftBank nearly 7%, Tokyo Electron over 5%, Renesas 4%. SKHX, which converts SK Hynix's KRW share price into USD, tracked the Seoul session almost one-for-one, printing its 10.08% slide to about $1,185.

Why SKHX Keeps Whipsawing

Zoom out and the perp is doing exactly what it should: mirroring a Korean stock that has been violently repricing since its US listing. SK Hynix raised roughly $26.5 billion in a blockbuster Nasdaq debut, the largest US IPO ever by a foreign company, jumped 13% on day one, then posted a record 15.4% single-day collapse in Seoul as domestic capital rotated into the ADRs.

The prior Seoul session it bounced roughly 8%; today it handed all of that back. That's the tell — this leg is sector beta, not a fresh company-specific problem. There's no bad HBM print, no lost Nvidia allocation, no guidance cut from SK Hynix itself, just a crowded semiconductor trade that one strategist notes now makes up around 20% of the S&P 500 unwinding a day's worth of enthusiasm.
