SKHX Gives Back Its Bounce as a Wall Street Chip Selloff Sweeps Asia
SK Hynix's US-listing euphoria has curdled into a whipsaw. A Wall Street semiconductor selloff spilled into Asia on July 16, knocking the Seoul common down about 11% and erasing the near-13% rebound it had posted a day earlier. SKHX, the Hyperliquid perp that tracks the Korean common, fell 6.13% over 17 hours to around $1,237 as the KOSPI tripped its 37th sidecar of the year. The driver here is sector-wide AI-capex angst, not a fresh company headline — this is the memory trade repricing, and SKHX is its Korean leg.
Mover Brief
The Rout Came From Wall Street
SK Hynix's Seoul common fell about 11% on July 16, tracking losses in US chipmakers as a semiconductor selloff spilled across Asia. The move was broad, not name-specific: Samsung Electronics dropped more than 8%, and in Tokyo the AI-equipment complex bled — Advantest -5.93%, SoftBank -6.27%, Renesas -7% — dragging the KOSPI into its 37th sidecar of 2026.
The trigger sits in the prior US session. Even with the Nasdaq closing higher on July 15, traders rotated out of chips and into Big Tech — Micron fell roughly 8%, with Lam Research and AMD also lower, while Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Apple all gained. The through-line is AI-capex angst: with over a trillion dollars of AI-chip market value erased this month and a wave of hyperscaler custom silicon shipping since late June, the market is repricing how durable Nvidia's — and by extension memory's — supply-tight setup really is. SKHX is the Korean leg of that same trade.
The Bounce That Didn't Hold
Wednesday looked like a floor. SK Hynix shares in Seoul had jumped nearly 13% on July 15, tracking US tech strength and a fresh Barclays coverage initiation, clawing back part of the post-debut damage. Thursday's rout erased it.
Zoom out and this is a stock still finding its price a week after going public. SK Hynix priced its ADRs at $149 and raised about $26.5 billion in a July 10 Nasdaq debut that popped 13%, then handed Seoul its worst single session on record — down 15.4% on July 13, a drop severe enough to trip a market-wide halt as the KOSPI shed 9%. SKHX, down 6.13% over 17 hours to about $1,237, is pricing that whipsaw in real time — the perp tracks one share of the KRW-denominated common, converted to USD.
Sector Beta, Not the HBM Note
It's worth separating the two overhangs on this tape. The company-specific one is real but older: a July 13 Korea Investment & Securities note pegged Q2 operating profit roughly 8% below consensus, cutting blended DRAM ASP growth assumptions from about 50% to 28.9% quarter-over-quarter as long-term HBM contracts cap pricing upside and full HBM4 volume slips to Q3. That framed the earlier legs of this correction.
This leg is different — it's sector beta. Nothing new came out of the company on July 16; SK Hynix fell because the entire AI-hardware complex did, from Seoul to Tokyo to Santa Clara. For the perp specifically, two mechanics matter: it settles against the Korean common through a KRW/USD oracle, so FX can push SKHX independently of the equity, and the ~$778M in 24-hour HIP-3 volume signals two-way interest that is real rather than thin. The question for the next session is whether the US complex stabilizes — if Wall Street chips bid, Seoul usually follows, and the channel that carried this selloff over works in reverse.
