How to Trade STX (Seagate Technology) on Hyperliquid
Seagate Technology makes the mass-capacity hard drives that hold the data behind the AI buildout, and the stock has repriced accordingly: fiscal 2026 revenue of $12.2 billion and nearline drive capacity largely sold out into 2028. STX now trades on Hyperliquid as a HIP-3 perpetual future under para:STX, with USDC margin and up to 10x leverage. The contract runs continuously, including when the Nasdaq is closed. Here is what the underlying business actually is, how the perp tracks it, and where the risk sits.
Market Guide
What Seagate Actually Sells
Seagate Technology Holdings plc trades on the Nasdaq as STX. It makes hard disk drives — the spinning magnetic storage that holds the bulk of the world's cold and warm data at a cost per terabyte flash still cannot match at scale. Three companies build HDDs at volume. Seagate is one of them.
The technology that changed the story is HAMR, heat-assisted magnetic recording, shipped under Seagate's Mozaic platform. A laser briefly heats the disk surface so bits can be written smaller and packed denser. On the fiscal Q4 call, management said HAMR reached roughly 40% of nearline exabyte shipments and targeted about 70% by mid-2027. Seagate has already signed a hyperscaler production deal for 44TB Mozaic 4+ drives.
The demand side is the AI buildout. Training and inference generate and retain enormous volumes of data, and that data lands on nearline HDDs, not GPUs. Seagate's nearline capacity is nearly fully allocated through calendar 2027, with most drives sold out through 2028, and 50TB-class qualification is slated for late 2027. That is forward visibility a hardware company almost never gets.
The Numbers That Repriced the Stock
Seagate closed fiscal 2026 on July 3 and reported on July 28. The fourth-quarter results: $3.6 billion in revenue, 52.3% GAAP gross margin, 52.7% non-GAAP, $5.58 GAAP diluted EPS, $5.71 non-GAAP, $1.3 billion of operating cash flow and $1.1 billion of free cash flow. Full-year revenue was $12.2 billion. The quarterly dividend sits at $0.74 per share.
The guide mattered more than the print. Seagate steered fiscal Q1 2027 to $4.1 billion ±$100 million in revenue and $7.30 ±$0.20 in non-GAAP EPS — roughly 14% sequential revenue growth and 28% sequential earnings growth. Commodity businesses do not guide like that unless pricing is theirs to set. CEO Dave Mosley put the thesis in one line in the release: "As AI accelerates data generation and its value, we see durable long-term demand for mass capacity storage."
The market has paid for a lot of this already. STX trades near $967 after more than tripling year to date, and the sell side keeps chasing the tape: Morgan Stanley raised its target to $1,035 on HDD shortages persisting through at least 2028, and Rosenblatt went to $1,000 from $500. A drive maker now carries a forward multiple that would have been unthinkable for the sector two years ago. That re-rating is the whole trade — in both directions.
How the HIP-3 Perp Works
para:STX is a perpetual future, not a tokenized share. No expiry, no delivery, no dividend, no vote. You post USDC as margin and take directional exposure to Seagate's share price with up to 10x leverage.
It exists because of HIP-3, Hyperliquid's builder-deployed perpetuals framework, live on mainnet since October 2025. A deployer stakes HYPE — 500,000 on mainnet — and runs its own perp DEX on HyperCore with its own markets, oracle, margin parameters and fee settings, under validator guardrails and open-interest caps. The deployer takes a 50% share of fees, and user fees on HIP-3 markets run at twice the rate of validator-operated crypto perps. That is the cost of the listing, and it should be in your model before you trade.
The mechanic that makes an equity perp work is the oracle. The Nasdaq closes; the contract does not. The deployer's oracle and mark-price logic carry a reference price through the close, weekends and holidays, and hourly funding pulls the perp back toward it. If the perp holds above the oracle, longs pay shorts. If it holds below, shorts pay longs. That hourly cadence is the anchor — and, when the underlying market is shut and positioning is one-sided, the bill.
Key Trading Considerations
Liquidity is the binding constraint. The STX perp turned over $18,843 in the last 24 hours. That is a market in its first innings. Expect wide spreads, thin book depth, and real slippage on anything beyond small size. Limit orders, not market orders. A 10x leverage cap is not a promise that 10x is usable — the exit matters more than the entry when the book is this shallow.
Closed-market gap risk cuts both ways. Trading through the Nasdaq close is the feature and the hazard. Seagate or hyperscaler-capex news breaking on a Saturday reprices the perp immediately, with the fewest participants on the book. Positions carried through a weekend or an earnings release face the widest ranges of the week.
Funding is a directional cost, not a rounding error. A stock that has tripled year to date attracts crowded longs, and crowded longs pay. Over a multi-day hold on a low-volume market, cumulative funding can outweigh your edge on entry.
The bull case has a specific failure mode. Seagate's 52% gross margins depend on tight nearline supply. If hyperscaler capex normalizes, or if flash pricing falls far enough to encroach on nearline workloads, the pricing power goes and the multiple goes with it. HDDs have a long history of violent down-cycles. The sold-out-into-2028 backlog is real, but it reflects customer intent and allocation, not revenue you can mark today.
Know the calendar. Seagate last reported on July 28, 2026. The next quarterly print, fiscal Q1 2027, is the next scheduled repricing event — and the perp will trade through it whether or not you are at the screen.
