TSLA Snaps Back as April Demand Prints Land Across China, Korea, and Germany
Tesla's April delivery data hit the tape on May 7 and it was unusually clean. China-made wholesale volume rose 36% year over year to 79,478 units, Korea posted an all-time monthly record beating BMW and Mercedes combined, and German registrations jumped 256% off a brutal 2025 base. The same day, NHTSA named the 2026 Model Y the first vehicle ever to pass its new ADAS test battery, partially unwinding the Hardware 3 credibility hit from the Q1 call.
Mover Brief
The April Demand Print
Three demand reads landed within hours of each other on May 7. China was the headliner: Tesla's Giga Shanghai shipped 79,478 China-made Model 3 and Model Y units, up 35.96% year over year — the sixth consecutive month of YoY gains, with 56,107 of those staying in the domestic retail channel and 29,563 going to export. Through April, Shanghai's year-to-date wholesale volume sits at 292,876 units, up 26.67%.
Korea was the surprise. Tesla sold 13,190 vehicles in April, an all-time monthly high in the country and roughly 2,000 units above the prior March record. Local press flagged that Tesla outsold BMW and Mercedes-Benz combined for the month — not a number anyone had on their April bingo card.
Germany, the most damaged market in the 2025 brand-perception data, printed 3,149 registrations — a 256% YoY jump that takes Tesla back to roughly 5% of the BEV segment. The base is low, but the direction reversed.
The relevant comparison is the Q1 delivery miss. Tesla missed its Q1 production and delivery numbers badly enough to leave a 50,000-unit inventory overhang, and the stock had already bled through that thesis. April demand cleanly above plan partially unwinds the bear case that the Q1 miss was structural rather than seasonal.
NHTSA Hands Tesla a Free Headline
On the same day, the NHTSA named the 2026 Model Y the first vehicle ever to pass its new ADAS test suite under the New Car Assessment Program — pedestrian AEB, lane-keeping, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention, on top of the original four ADAS criteria. Vehicles built on or after November 12, 2025 qualify.
The caveat, per Electrek: the Trump administration delayed full implementation to model year 2027 last September after the Alliance for Automotive Innovation asked for more time, so most automakers haven't submitted vehicles yet. "First to pass" is partly "first to bother showing up." Still, in narrative terms the headline does work for Tesla — three weeks ago Musk conceded on the Q1 call that Hardware 3 cars cannot achieve unsupervised FSD, stranding ~4M vehicles. A federal pass on Model Y's active-safety stack is the cleanest possible counter-headline to that story.
The Semi Order Sitting Underneath
Two days earlier at ACT Expo, WattEV announced an order for 370 Tesla Semis, the largest single Class 8 EV deployment in California to date and roughly $100M of bookings. The first 50 deliver in 2026, with more than 300 of the trucks earmarked for a Port of Oakland drayage program, and the rollout is paired with new Megawatt Charging stations at Oakland and Fresno.
The Semi line item barely moves Tesla's near-term P&L on its own — but combined with Friday's demand prints and the NHTSA headline, it gives the bull side three discrete things to point at in a week, against a stock that's still trading at a forward multiple in the triple digits and was ~20% off its YTD lows heading into the move.
