Monero Rebounds as Zcash's Counterfeit Bug Flips the Privacy Trade

XMR is up 7.50% over 24 hours to $325.60, reversing the privacy-coin rotation that drained it into Zcash all spring. The trigger sat on the other side of the trade: security engineer Taylor Hornby disclosed a four-year-old counterfeiting flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool, found with help from an AI model, that could have minted unlimited fake ZEC, and ZEC fell 38% on the news. With Zcash's marquee privacy tech suddenly looking fragile, Monero's older, battle-tested ring-signature design has taken the bid back. The catch is that Hornby has already added Monero to his audit queue, so the rebound is running with the same scrutiny now pointed at XMR.

Mover Brief

The Trade Flips Back

XMR is up 7.50% over the past 24 hours to $325.60, and the cleanest way to read it is as a reversal of the privacy-coin rotation that spent the spring draining Monero into Zcash. Four days ago HIPERWIRE flagged XMR losing its $340 trendline support as capital chased ZEC, which had cleared a 2026 high above $585 after Multicoin Capital went public with a position. That trade just got blown up from the other side. The privacy thesis didn't die — the seat capital was sitting in did.

What Broke in Zcash

On May 29, security engineer Taylor Hornby — hired by nonprofit Shielded Labs in April to hunt protocol bugs — found a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool using Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8. The bug had sat live and undetected since Orchard activated in May 2022, and it could have been used to mint unlimited counterfeit ZEC indistinguishable from the real thing. Developers shipped an emergency fix by June 1, but ZEC fell 38% in the 24 hours after disclosure. This is about as bad as a privacy-coin failure gets. The entire pitch is cryptographic soundness, and the marquee shielded pool had a four-year hole in it that a single researcher and an AI model surfaced in days.

Why Monero Took the Bid

Here is the part the market is actually pricing. Zcash's break was in its zk-SNARK Orchard design — elegant, novel, and, as it turns out, fragile. Monero's privacy runs on older ring signatures and decoy outputs that have been attacked, patched, and stress-tested for a decade. When the sophisticated privacy coin reveals a counterfeiting bug, the boring one suddenly looks like the safer expression of the same trade. That relative-resilience read is showing up as flow, and it sits on top of a Monero-specific upgrade narrative around Full Chain Membership Proofs (FCMP++) and a bounce from the $330–$355 demand zone. The net is straightforward: capital that rotated out of XMR into ZEC now has a concrete reason to come back.

The Loaded Gun

The honest risk is that this rebound is running with a target on its back. Asked on X whether he would look at Monero next, Hornby replied, "Absolutely! I'll add Monero to my queue of things to audit" — and the same AI-assisted method that cracked Orchard is now being pointed across the privacy sector. XMR itself dipped roughly 10% when the audit-queue news first landed before reclaiming the level. If that audit turns up anything in Monero, this entire relative-strength trade reverses in an afternoon. Worth noting too that the flx:XMR perp here is thin — about $76,000 in 24-hour volume — so on this specific venue news-driven flow pushes the mark harder than the size implies. The rebound is real. The all-clear is not.
