ZEC Squeezes Through $580 as Hyperliquid's Largest Short Bleeds

The mechanics here are what they look like. The wallet running Hyperliquid's largest ZEC short — 0xd475 — opened a $31.75M notional 5x position at $293.03 back in October and has refused to close it. As ZEC marched through every level on the way up, the trader topped up roughly $24.8 million in USDC margin to push the liquidation line to $1,111. Today's break through $580 just made that bet uglier: cumulative losses are now north of 250% of entry.

That single position is not the whole squeeze, but it shapes the book. Bitget's tracking shows the address has trimmed $8M in exposure even as the unrealized deficit widened to $21.75M, meaning *some* covering is happening — just not enough to cap the move. Underneath, smaller shorts are getting flushed: ZEC perps printed roughly $17.91 million in short liquidations on the squeeze leg, each one a forced market buy. That is how a 21-hour move turns into 37%.

The Spot Story

The squeeze is amplifying spot, not inventing it. ZEC has done over 60% in seven days on a stack of catalysts that genuinely matter. Grayscale's filing to convert its Zcash Trust into a spot ETF — in flight at the SEC since November 2025 — is the macro fact every thread keeps coming back to. Trust trading volume doubled at the end of April as the ETF process moved forward.

Underneath the institutional bid is a network story. Shielded supply hit a record 30% of float, roughly 5.18M ZEC, with the Orchard pool taking nearly all of the inflow. Coin Metrics' breakout note frames it as a real revival in on-chain privacy demand, not a speculative artifact. Add Robinhood's spot listing, Foundry's institutional mining pool, and ZODL's $25M funding round, and the perp shorts were never going to find an easy bottom.

The Liquidation Map

From here, the read is mechanical. The whale's $1,111 line is the upper bound — until they top up margin again — and anywhere meaningfully below that the trade can keep bleeding without a forced unwind. If 0xd475 capitulates, the cover order is $30M+ of ZEC dropped into a thin book. If they keep doubling down, the slow grind costs them seven figures a day in funding alone.

The perp/spot basis is the other tell. ZEC overtook Solana in 24-hour perp trading volume on Hyperliquid as of May 4, so the venue is doing genuine price discovery on this name now — but depth has not caught up to that flow, and HIP-3 hyna books are thinner still than the main perp. Expect both directions to overshoot until the whale position resolves one way or the other.
