ZHIPU Hands Back Part of Its Compute Re-Rate as a Thin Perp Overshoots Spot

ZHIPU is down 11.62% over two hours to $144.90, but there is no fresh company headline behind it — the underlying Z.AI H-share is only off about 5.4% intraday to HK$1,153 from Tuesday's HK$1,219 close. The thin, USD-denominated perp is simply discounting about twice the cash move, giving back part of this week's compute-independence re-rate rather than pricing anything new. That re-rate had carried the stock off its HK$890-area Kimi K3 washout on news that Z.AI finished a 1-gigawatt data center running entirely on Chinese chips. Until the H-share reclaims the HK$1,588 placement price overhead, moves like this stay inside the range Zhipu has traded since the Moonshot shock.

Mover Brief

A Pullback Without a Headline

ZHIPU marks $144.90, down 11.62% over the last two hours, and there is no company-specific news to hang it on. The underlying — Z.AI's Hong Kong H-share (2513.HK) — is down about 5.4% intraday to HK$1,153 from Tuesday's HK$1,219 close, an ordinary give-back after a violent week. The perp is down roughly twice as much.

That gap is the whole story of this two-hour candle. A thin, USD-denominated book that tracks a HKD stock at the prevailing FX rate and clears up to 10x leverage will overshoot the cash tape in both directions, and right now it is overshooting to the downside. Nothing about the 11.62% print says the thesis broke — it says leveraged holders sold faster than the H-share did.

The Re-Rate It's Unwinding

To read the drop you have to know what rallied first. Last week Z.AI completed a 1-gigawatt AI data center built entirely on Chinese-made chips — Huawei Ascend accelerators on Huawei's MindSpore stack — which it framed as the first major open model trained on a fully domestic pipeline. Bloomberg reported the same buildout as a direct answer to U.S. export controls. That compute-independence story sent the shares up as much as 19% and dragged the H-share off its HK$890-area washout back to Tuesday's HK$1,219 close.

The washout itself came from the opposite direction: Moonshot's Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open model, launched July 16, and Zhipu slid more than 20% on the competitive re-rate. So the move you are watching is the third leg of a round trip, not a new event: shock down, re-rate up, and now part of that re-rate coming back out.

The Two Forces Still Boxing It In

Zhipu remains caught between a real competitive threat and a real bull case, and this pullback resolves neither. On the bear side, Kimi K3 is genuine demand pressure — Moonshot had to halt new signups within days of launch because the model was oversubscribed, a reminder of how fast attention rotates in open-weight Chinese AI. On the bull side, surging demand for GLM models is straining Z.AI's own compute, which is exactly why the domestic data center matters.

Overhead sits the placement. Two weeks ago Zhipu priced 19.78 million new H-shares at HK$1,588, the largest Hong Kong refinancing of 2026, and the stock has not reclaimed that level. With a 52-week range of HK$116 to HK$2,980 since its January IPO, this is a name that trades in 20-30% legs — an 11.62% perp candle is inside the noise until the H-share tells you which force won.
