CL Rips 4.60% Into the Ceasefire Cliff as Trump Says Military Is 'Raring to Go'

The two-week US-Iran ceasefire runs out tonight. Trump went on CNBC this morning and told the network he is not extending it: "I expect to be bombing because I think that's a better attitude to go in with. But we're ready to go. I mean, the military is raring to go." VP Vance is leading the US delegation into Islamabad for round two, but Iranian officials have publicly denied that Tehran is sending a counterparty at all. Parliament speaker Qalibaf has framed the sit-down as negotiations under the shadow of threats, which is not how people talk when a deal is close.

The Strait of Hormuz has been functionally shut since Tehran reclaimed control of the choke point over the weekend, after Washington refused to lift its naval blockade. Gulf producers are running roughly 3 million bpd below March levels and about 13 million bpd below pre-war baseline. The shut-in barrels are what matter. Peace headlines only work if they translate into actual tanker traffic, and right now they don't.

Why the Book Is Thin

May WTI (CLK26) rolls today at 2:30 PM ET, and front-month open interest is only around 19.8k contracts heading into settlement. That is a thin tape by any standard, and it is a thin tape on the single biggest geopolitical deadline of the month. Every incremental headline — Trump threatening Iranian power plants and bridges, Iranian officials denying a delegation, Vance boarding a jet — lands on a book that cannot absorb it. That is the asymmetry behind the +4.60% print in ten hours on a day when most of the morning tape in Asia and Europe was actually lower, trading around $86 on Islamabad talks hopes.

On the perp side, the HIP-3 CL market has cleared $572M in 24h volume. Positioning is active rather than passive — traders are chasing the expiry window, not hedging through it.

What Moves It From Here

Two things matter tonight. Whether an Iranian delegation actually shows up in Islamabad with substance, and whether Trump follows through on the strike rhetoric once the clock runs out. A confirmed meeting with real agenda takes $90 off the table fast — Friday's 11.5% single-day plunge when Iran briefly declared Hormuz open is the template for how quickly this unwinds. Anything else — another vessel incident, a public walkout, a confirmed strike on infrastructure — keeps the bid firmly in place and puts $95 to $100 back on the board, which is where Brent was already trading earlier this month.

The inventory counterweight is real but slow. API printed a 6.1 million barrel build and EIA prints Wednesday. Inventory data does not repair the Strait of Hormuz. Until tankers move again, physical crude is bid regardless of what the paper barrels say.
