Arthur Hayes Puts a $150 Target on HYPE, and the Market Is Listening

HYPE jumped 11% after BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes published a $150 price target, arguing Hyperliquid's revenue-to-buyback loop makes it crypto's most aggressive capital return story. The call lands as platform open interest crosses $6 billion and the token absorbs a $316 million contributor unlock without breaking down.

Mover Brief

The Hayes Thesis

Arthur Hayes published his HYPE call on March 9 through Maelstrom, his family office fund. The headline number — $150 by August — represents roughly a 5x from current levels but would still leave the token 45% below its September 2025 peak of $59.

The core of the thesis is mechanical, not speculative. Hyperliquid directs 97% of net fee revenue to HYPE buybacks and permanent burns. Hayes argues that no other project in crypto returns capital this aggressively, and that applying even modest TradFi-style revenue multiples to the platform's fee run rate produces triple-digit token prices.

His model assumes Hyperliquid's 30-day annualized revenue — currently around $843 million — rebounds to its August 2025 peak of $1.4 billion by mid-year. That's a big assumption, but not an absurd one given the platform's current trajectory. Hayes discloses that Maelstrom holds substantial HYPE exposure accumulated at lower prices.

The Credibility Question

Hayes is a compelling narrator, but his track record on HYPE specifically deserves scrutiny. Last year he made a similarly bullish call on the token, then his office sold shortly after. He freely admits a roughly 25% hit rate on his public predictions.

That said, the market doesn't seem to care about the meta-narrative. HYPE moved from $31 to $34 in the 24 hours following the post. Whether that's genuine re-rating or reflexive front-running of the call is an open question, but the move is holding into the second session.

Platform Fundamentals Back It Up

What makes this move interesting beyond the Hayes signal is the underlying activity data. Hyperliquid's open interest crossed $6 billion in the last 24 hours — more than Aster, edgrX, Lighter, Grvt, and ApeX combined. The platform hit 3.4 million daily transactions on March 3, an all-time high, and has processed over $3.64 trillion in cumulative volume.

The revenue diversification story is also real. HIP-3 permissionless listings now account for roughly 10% of platform revenue. New markets in crude oil, precious metals, and equity indices are pulling meaningful volume, and Hyperliquid's ability to offer weekend trading on commodities during geopolitical volatility — like the recent Iran escalation — gives it a structural edge over traditional venues.

February network fees came in at $69 million, slightly below January's $76 million but still feeding the buyback engine.

Supply Absorbed, Resistance Ahead

The most telling signal may be what didn't happen. On March 6, Hyperliquid unlocked 9.92 million HYPE tokens — $316 million worth, 2.72% of circulating supply — directed entirely to core contributors. That kind of unlock typically creates multi-day sell pressure. Instead, HYPE bottomed near $30 and reversed hard into the Hayes catalyst four days later.

Technically, the token has broken above its 50-day EMA and cleared a falling wedge pattern. RSI sits above 60 with positive PPO, pointing toward the $38.50 resistance level. A clean break there puts $43 in play — still well short of Hayes's $150, but enough to confirm the trend shift from the $20 YTD low.
