How to Trade IGV (iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF) on Hyperliquid

IGV is BlackRock's iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF, a roughly $15 billion basket of 111 North American software names led by Palo Alto Networks, Palantir, Microsoft and CrowdStrike. It has become the market's cleanest single-ticker referendum on whether AI agents destroy seat-based software revenue or expand it. A HIP-3 perpetual futures market on Hyperliquid now tracks the price of one IGV share, with up to 10x leverage and no equity market hours. This guide covers what the fund holds, why the software trade matters right now, and what changes when you express it as a perp instead of a share.

What IGV Actually Holds

IGV is the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF, launched by BlackRock in July 2001. It tracks the S&P North American Expanded Technology Software Index — North American software companies plus a slice of interactive home entertainment and interactive media names. As of early September 2026 it holds 111 positions with about $15.1 billion in assets and a 0.38% expense ratio.

Call it diversified if you want, but read the weights first. The top ten holdings are roughly 63% of the fund, and the top five alone carry serious size: Palo Alto Networks near 10.4%, Palantir near 10.2%, Microsoft near 9.3%, CrowdStrike near 7.5%, and Oracle near 5.8%. That composition tells you what IGV really is in 2026 — a cybersecurity-and-data-platform book with a hyperscaler anchor, not a broad basket of mid-cap SaaS. Palo Alto and CrowdStrike together outweigh Microsoft. If you are short IGV expecting the classic seat-based SaaS names to break, understand that a security-spending cycle and a Palantir re-rate can carry the index against you.

The fund fact sheet as of June 30, 2026 put the portfolio P/E at 34.26x on 108 holdings and $13.5 billion in net assets. Software is not being priced as a value sector, even after the year it has had.

Why the Software Trade Is Live Right Now

IGV is one of the few tickers where a single macro argument dominates the tape. The argument is whether AI agents replace software seats or get sold as software seats.

The 2026 drawdown was real. Software went through what the market nicknamed the SaaSpocalypse — a violent de-rating on the thesis that agents break the link between headcount growth and subscription revenue, with commentators noting software trading at a discount to the S&P 500 for the first time. Then it reversed. Retail bought a record net $46 million of IGV in a single session in June, roughly 40% above the prior record set in February, on the day the fund rallied 5.9%. Vanda Research read it as the AI and semiconductor trade broadening, with software as an early beneficiary — a flows story as much as a fundamentals story. CNBC framed the same session as software passing a milestone back into positive year-to-date territory.

The scoreboard as of September 4, 2026: IGV trades near $105 against a 52-week range of $73.93 to $117.99, and its one-year total return is about -2.1%. That is the whole setup in three numbers. The fund is roughly 42% off its low and roughly 11% off its high, and it has returned nothing over a year while doing both. This is a range that has paid mean reversion and punished trend-following, which is exactly why traders keep coming back to it.

What moves it: enterprise software earnings, security spend guidance, rate expectations, and any credible datapoint on agent-driven seat compression. Because the top five holdings are more than a third of the fund, IGV is functionally a correlated basket trade on five earnings dates, not a smooth sector average.

How the HIP-3 Perpetual Works

The IGV market on Hyperliquid is a perpetual futures contract deployed under the para namespace via HIP-3, Hyperliquid's builder-deployed perpetuals framework. One contract tracks the price of one IGV share. You are not buying the ETF. You hold no shares, receive no dividend, get no creation-redemption rights, and have no claim on Palo Alto Networks or anything else in the basket. You hold a synthetic exposure that settles in crypto collateral against an oracle price.

HIP-3 matters mechanically here. Under the framework, a deployer stakes 500,000 HYPE with a minimum 183-day lock, defines the market spec — oracle sources, leverage limits, collateral, margining — and runs an independent order book with its own margin system separate from Hyperliquid's core perps. Validators can slash that stake for malicious market operation, and the docs are blunt that slashing is technical and does not distinguish between malicious and incompetent behavior. The practical read for a trader: your fill quality, your oracle, and your liquidation price are set by the deployer, not by Hyperliquid's core book. Price the deployer, not just the asset.

The contract offers up to 10x leverage. Funding transfers between longs and shorts to keep the perp tethered to the oracle, which for an equity underlying introduces something crypto traders do not usually face: the reference asset stops printing. NYSE closes; the perp does not. Over weekends and overnight gaps you are trading a market's expectation of where IGV opens, and funding is the mechanism that rations that positioning.

Key Trading Considerations

Liquidity is the first constraint, not the thesis. Recent 24-hour volume on the IGV HIP-3 market was about $8,900. That is a market where a modest clip moves the book. Size accordingly, use limit orders, and assume slippage on exit is worse than slippage on entry. A correct directional call can still lose money to the spread at this depth.

Gap risk is structural. The underlying trades roughly 32.5 hours a week; your perp trades 168. Earnings from a top-five holding landing after the close, or a weekend macro headline, resolves into the oracle price with no ability to trade the path. At 10x, a 5% overnight gap against you is most of your margin. Leverage that works on a 24/7 crypto underlying is meaningfully more dangerous on an instrument whose reference market is closed two thirds of the time.

Concentration cuts both ways. With the top ten at about 63% of the fund and cybersecurity carrying the largest weights, IGV is a cleaner expression of "security and data platforms" than of "software" broadly. If your view is specifically about seat-based SaaS pricing collapsing, IGV is an imperfect vehicle — Palantir and Palo Alto are not the names your thesis is about, and they are the two biggest positions.

Valuation gives you no cushion. A mid-30s portfolio P/E on the June fact sheet means multiple compression, not just earnings misses, is a live downside path. Software has already demonstrated in 2026 that it can lose a third of its value on narrative alone.

Know what you are actually holding. A synthetic perp on an ETF introduces stacked layers of basis: index versus fund, fund versus oracle, oracle versus perp. In quiet markets those layers are invisible. In fast ones they are where the surprises live.
