Micron Falls to $922 as Samsung's Record Quarter Sparks a Memory Sell-the-News Rout

Samsung posted the best quarter in its history and the stock still fell, and that reaction rippled straight through the memory complex. SK Hynix, Kioxia, then Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital all sold off as traders read a fully-priced-in upcycle as a reason to take profits. MU is down 8.71% over 24 hours to $922.80, round-tripping its post-earnings gains back below pre-report levels. The setup is loaded: an SK Hynix Nasdaq listing lands July 10 and oversupply fears are creeping back into the memory trade.

Mover Brief

A Record Quarter Nobody Wanted to Own

The trigger came out of Seoul, not a Micron press release. Samsung reported blowout fiscal Q2 numbers — operating profit of roughly $58 billion, up about 1,810% year over year and ahead of estimates — and its shares still fell as much as 9%. The market had already priced the memory upcycle in, and the print became a textbook sell-the-news event.

The reaction didn't stay in Asia. The rout swept SK Hynix, Kioxia and SoftBank overnight, then crossed into the U.S. names: Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital all sank around 7% as chip stocks tracked their Asian peers lower. Micron itself was dragged down over 5% pre-market before extending losses. On Hyperliquid, the MU perp sits at $922.80, down 8.71% over 24 hours — a $376.9M volume session on the market. When the single best quarter the sector has printed in years can't hold a bid, that's a sentiment read, not a fundamentals read.

The Overhangs Stacking Up

This wasn't a one-headline drop — it landed on a stock already carrying a stack of overhangs. The most concrete is calendar risk: SK Hynix is set to list on the Nasdaq under ticker SKHY around July 10 at roughly a $28 billion offering. SK Hynix holds close to 60% of the HBM market, so the listing hands U.S. investors clean, direct exposure to the AI-memory leader without having to own Micron — a straightforward rotation risk into the print.

Underneath that, the oversupply narrative is creeping back. Samsung and SK Hynix have flagged roughly $2 trillion in combined capacity expansion, and even if the shortage holds through 2026, the tape is starting to discount what comes after. Layer on the broader rotation out of AI hardware and into software — Meta's move to sell third-party AI compute read as a signal of excess capacity — plus the insider-selling backdrop this desk has flagged all week, and the result is a name now down about 22% from its June high near $1,255, fully round-tripped below its pre-earnings level.

What the Bulls Still Own

The bear case here is entirely about positioning and competition, not demand — and that's the crux of the debate. Micron just locked in Anthropic as a marquee customer, named first-choice supplier of memory and storage for its advanced AI systems, with HBM and storage co-development and a Series H equity stake attached. Management frames it as the 16th multi-year agreement collectively backing roughly $22 billion in committed upfront revenue under take-or-pay terms, and its HBM is reportedly sold out for all of 2026.

That's why sell-side conviction hasn't cracked: 45 analysts still rate the stock a strong buy with an average target near $1,486, and momentum is now stretched to the downside with RSI in oversold territory. The real question this selloff poses isn't whether AI memory demand is real — it plainly is — but whether a stock that ran several-fold in a year can simultaneously absorb a freshly listed HBM competitor and a returning supply-glut fear without giving back more of the move first. Right now the tape is voting that the burden of proof sits with the bulls.
