Micron Grinds Lower Into Earnings as the SOCAMM Cut Gets Misread as Demand
MU is at $925.30, down 6.83% over 24h and still whipsawing in the wide band it carved out after the post-Broadcom unwind off its June 3 record close near $1,080. The driver remains a SemiAnalysis report that Nvidia is roughly halving SOCAMM memory per Vera Rubin rack — but that is CPU-side system memory and reportedly a supply-rationing move amid an LPDDR5X shortage, and it leaves the HBM4 that carries Micron's AI margins untouched. With Q3 earnings on June 24 carrying a roughly 20% implied move, this stretch looks like positioning, not new information.
Mover Brief
What the Tape Is Actually Reacting To
Micron printed a record close of $1,079.57 on June 3 and then handed back roughly a fifth of its value in two sessions. The triggers were stacked. Broadcom's fiscal Q2 report landed Thursday evening with Hock Tan declining to raise the full-year AI semiconductor revenue target, which read across the entire AI-infrastructure complex, and a hotter-than-expected May jobs report pushed yields up and piled macro pressure onto every high-beta semi name. The memory-specific spark was a SemiAnalysis note that Nvidia is cutting SOCAMM DRAM per Vera Rubin NVL72 rack — shipping 96GB modules instead of the expected 192GB, taking rack-level system memory from about 55TB to roughly 28TB. The read-through was brutal: SOXX had its worst day since March 2020, SanDisk fell 11%, and Marvell dropped more than 16%.
Supply Rationing, Not a Demand Cut
This is where I think the tape has it wrong. The SOCAMM reduction is CPU-side system memory, and by SemiAnalysis's own framing it is an engineering-level supply decision: LPDDR5X is tight, so Nvidia ships fewer modules per rack to get compute online rather than delay the rack. The modules are hot-swappable, so 96GB today can step up to 192GB or 256GB when supply loosens, and fewer modules per rack can actually mean *more* racks deployed under the same supply ceiling. None of that touches HBM4 — which is where Micron's AI margins actually live. Micron said on June 1 it is in high-volume production of HBM4 designed for Vera Rubin, and Nvidia named Micron alongside Samsung and SK hynix as a Rubin HBM4 supplier. The part of the bill of materials that carries the franchise is intact; the part that got cut is the lower-margin, supply-constrained one.
A Stock That Can't Pick a Side
After the two-session drop, MU rebounded almost 10% on Monday to $949.28 and has since whipsawed back into the low $900s, now at $925.30 and down 6.83% over 24h. That is the signature of a market that can't decide whether the SOCAMM headline is a fundamental derate or a positioning shake-out. There has been no fresh company-specific news between the bounce and now, so these moves are flow, not information — and the roughly $895-to-$950 range that has opened up in a matter of days is the cost of carrying the position into a binary event.
What June 24 Decides
The whole argument collapses into one print. Micron reports fiscal Q3 2026 on June 24, with consensus near $19.72 EPS — roughly a 930% year-over-year jump — on about $34.4 billion in revenue, up close to 270%. The options market is pricing a move of about 20% on the report. Sell-side targets still sit well above the tape, and the rating is effectively a unanimous buy. If guidance confirms HBM4 demand and pricing, the SOCAMM scare looks like noise in hindsight; if management hedges on memory content per rack, the bears get their read. Either way the resolution is two weeks out, and everything between now and then is positioning.
