Micron Reclaims $900 as UBS Puts $400B and 40% of the Float on Its Post-CHIPS Buyback
Micron reclaimed the $900 level it had been failing at, up 6.17% over 24 hours to $907, after UBS put hard numbers on the one thing the stock has not been allowed to do: buy itself back. The bank projects more than $400 billion in free cash flow through 2028 and says Micron could retire over 40% of its shares once its CHIPS Act buyback restriction expires on December 9, 2026. Nothing changed in the business this week — HBM is sold out and DRAM is at cycle highs — so this is a re-rating on capital-return math, not fresh fundamentals. It also lands as the direct counter to Michael Burry's cycle-top short.
Mover Brief
The Buyback Math
The move traces to a single UBS note that circulated July 20. UBS models Micron generating more than $400 billion in free cash flow through calendar 2028 and argues that once the company's buyback restriction lifts, it could repurchase over 40% of its shares by the end of 2028 at current prices — roughly halving the float. The framing spread fast on fintwit, where the "$400B in cash, 40% of shares" line did the work. Alger's Ankur Crawford put a similar number on it, estimating cash generation equal to about 30% of Micron's current market value over the next 18 months.
The catch is the calendar. Micron is restricted from meaningful buybacks through December 9, 2026 under its CHIPS Act direct funding agreement — for the first two years after the December 2024 award, repurchases are capped to offsetting stock-comp dilution unless Commerce signs off. UBS's thesis is essentially a countdown: the cash is already being generated, but the company is caged from returning it until the restriction expires.
A Re-Rating, Not News
Nothing changed inside Micron's business on July 20. HBM for 2026 has been sold out with pricing locked for months, HBM4 is in high-volume production, and DRAM contract pricing sits at cycle highs — all of that was true a week ago when the stock was grinding the low $800s. What changed is that the market started pricing the *capital return* rather than the *earnings*. KeyBanc's John Vinh reiterated that memory shortages remain persistent and AI demand is intact, but that is the backdrop, not the trigger.
The buyback frame matters because it is the direct answer to the bear case. Michael Burry shorted Micron on July 3 at $1,051.87, calling the run fear-of-missing-out and greater-fool psychology rather than rational analysis, and folding it into a broader AI-chip short against Nvidia, Applied Materials, and SOXX. Burry's argument is that the memory cycle rolls over from here. UBS's is that even if numbers soften, $400 billion of cash retiring 40% of the share count changes the per-share math regardless. July 20 was the tape leaning toward UBS, at least for a session.
The $900 Line
Price-wise the tell is the level. MU had repeatedly failed at $900 through mid-July, slipping toward the $800 area on the semiconductor de-rate that followed its June peak. At $907 it has now reclaimed the level that had been acting as resistance. Zoom out and the volatility is the story: the stock bottomed near $311 in March, ran to a 52-week high around $1,154 in June, and is still up roughly 184% year-to-date even after the mid-July pullback. The $272.6M of 24h volume on the perp shows this is being actively repriced, not drifting on a thin book — the argument between Burry's cycle short and the buyback bull case is getting traded out in real size.
