RKLB Outruns Its Implied Move on $200M Q1 and 108% Backlog Jump

Rocket Lab's Q1 print cleared every line of guidance, with $200.3M in revenue, a 38.2% GAAP gross margin, and a backlog that jumped 108% year over year to $2.2 billion. The 24/7 HIP-3 perp ran the move ahead of the cash open and ended up outpacing the 13.88% post-earnings swing options had been pricing in. Underneath the beat: a closed Mynaric deal, a fresh definitive agreement to acquire Motiv Space Systems, and a Q2 revenue guide of $225-240M that flags margin compression as Neutron spend ramps.

Mover Brief

The Print That Cleared Every Line

Rocket Lab dropped Q1 2026 numbers after the close on May 7 and beat its own guidance on every metric the market cared about. Revenue came in at $200.3 million, a 63.5% year-over-year jump and roughly $10M ahead of the ~$190M consensus. GAAP gross margin hit 38.2% versus 28.8% in the year-ago quarter, and the non-GAAP figure stretched to 43% — that is the kind of margin expansion that quietly rewrites the model.

Both segments contributed. Space Systems revenue was $136.7M (+57.2% YoY), and Launch Services delivered $63.7M (+78.9% YoY) — rare to see launch out-grow systems on a percentage basis at this company. Backlog jumped 108% year-over-year to $2.2 billion, and management called out closing the Mynaric AG acquisition and signing a definitive agreement to buy Motiv Space Systems, the team behind robotics on NASA Mars missions.

Why The Perp Outran The Implied Move

Going into the print, options were pricing a 13.88% post-earnings move versus a 4.65% four-quarter average. The xyz:RKLB perp ran 20.75% over 19 hours and now sits at $94.61 — well past where vol traders were leaning.

The reason the realized print outran the implied is mix. A revenue beat alone would not have moved this stock 20% — RKLB has beaten and faded before. What is different this quarter is that the gross margin line came in at the top end and the backlog crossed $2 billion for the first time. That combination flips the narrative from 'growth at any cost' to 'growth that prints operating leverage.' Layer on the Motiv definitive agreement, a $30M Anduril HASTE contract, and the largest launch contract in company history for five Neutrons and three Electrons, and the bulls had four reasons to add, not one.

The HIP-3 perp also benefits from running 24/7. By the time NYSE opened May 8, mark price had already absorbed most of the post-print buying, with funding skewing positive as longs paid to chase. Anyone who waited for the cash open paid up.

What the Q2 Guide Hides

The forward number is where the air thins. Rocket Lab guided Q2 revenue to $225-240M, but GAAP gross margin steps back to 33-35% and adjusted EBITDA loss widens to $20-26M from $11.8M in Q1. The reason is mix-shift back toward Neutron development spend and lower-margin launch deliveries. None of that is a thesis breaker, but it caps how much further the multiple can stretch on Q1's print alone.

Neutron is still the binary catalyst. Management is holding to a Q4 2026 maiden flight after the Stage 1 tank rupture earlier in the qualification campaign and a production move to automated fiber placement. Any further slip pushes the 'Falcon 9 alternative' narrative out of 2026 entirely, and the perp is leveraged to that timeline more than the cash equity is — funding can flip quickly on a single FAA or pad headline, and the order book is thin enough that a clean reversal trade only takes one motivated seller.

Dilution is the quiet drag. Weighted average share count is up roughly 20% YoY to ~605M from ATM equity raises funding the Neutron build-out. This quarter's beat absorbs that pressure; another miss would amplify it.
