SKHY Bounces Off a 10% Drawdown as HSBC Calls the Memory-Peak Fear Overdone

The SK Hynix ADR is clawing back most of a rough month as Korea-led memory names rebound with no fresh company news. HSBC is still holding SK Hynix as its top memory pick, arguing the market is wrong to price a cycle top. The real test comes July 29, when the Q2 print finally forces the proxy to trade a number.

Mover Brief

Reclaiming the Drawdown

The SKHY perp is up 6.51% to about $167.30, with roughly $218M in 24h volume changing hands on this market. That is the tail end of a broader Korea-led bounce: the underlying SK Hynix ADR ran as much as 14% to $172.80 intraday on Tuesday, recovering most of a roughly 10% pullback over the prior month.

There is no company-specific catalyst here. This is beta — Seoul-listed memory and the Nasdaq ADR moving together as Asia tech leads a broad chip rebound, with SK Hynix, as the highest-beta name in the HBM trade, doing the heavy lifting. When the memory complex is in favor, this is the ticker that moves most in both directions.

HSBC and the Peak-Cycle Fight

The setup underneath the bounce is a genuine disagreement about whether the memory cycle has topped. HSBC is firmly on the bull side: it reaffirmed SK Hynix as its top memory pick last week, calling fears of a cycle peak overdone and pointing to rising HBM prices and durable AI demand. The bank frames it as a valuation gap begging to close — SK Hynix trades near 8-9x forward earnings versus Micron's double-digit multiple, a spread HSBC attributes largely to a lingering "Korea discount."

That is the whole reason the U.S. ADR exists. Priced at $166 at listing, it is a bet that global capital reprices the cheaper, higher-beta HBM leader closer to its American peer. HSBC's roughly $200 target implies about 20% upside, and its longer thesis leans on an HBM market it sees compounding around 70% annually through 2028. Days like this are the discount narrowing in real time — until the next tape-wide risk-off widens it back out.

July 29 Is the Binary Print

Everything funnels into one date. SK Hynix reports Q2 results on July 29 at 9:00 a.m. Seoul time, and that is the binary catalyst traders are positioning around — specifically HBM4 shipment timing and pricing commentary, the two variables that settle the peak-cycle argument.

The bar is set high because Micron already cleared it. Its most recent quarter delivered $41.46B in revenue, up 346% year over year, with a guide to $50B and an 85% gross margin. SK Hynix, as the primary HBM supplier into Nvidia's accelerators, is the more direct — and more leveraged — way to play the same demand. Right now SKHY is trading a proxy; on July 29 it finally trades a number, and that print decides whether this bounce was the start of the discount closing or just another swing before the real data lands.
