SKHY Rides a Temasek Headline as the Nasdaq Premium Re-Widens Toward 48%

SKHY ran to $167.50 on Hyperliquid after Asia Business Daily reported that Singapore's Temasek plans to buy directly into Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, lifting Korean memory names across the board. Temasek then told Bloomberg it has held both stocks since mid-2024 and did not consult Seoul on timing, which drains most of the new-money premise out of the headline. The sharper story for perp traders is the basis: the Nasdaq ADS this market tracks now sits roughly 48% above the Seoul-listed common, and every past compression in that spread came out of the US line, not out of Korea.

Mover Brief

The Temasek Headline, and Temasek's Own Correction

The move traces to a single wire story. Asia Business Daily reported that Singapore's Temasek is preparing to invest directly in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix through its internal investment team, with the fund still weighing timing. Seoul took it at face value: Samsung closed up 6.7% and SK hynix 5.5%, both briefly trading more than 8% higher, with the Kospi up 3.7%.

Then it got complicated. Temasek told Bloomberg it first invested in both companies more than two years ago, in mid-2024, and that it did not seek advice from the South Korean government on the timing of any investment. That is not a denial, but it is close to one on the part that actually mattered. The tape bid these names as though a sovereign fund managing roughly $400 billion were opening a fresh position in size. Temasek's own version reads more like rebalancing inside a book it already holds.

The underlying thesis is real: the fund is reported to view memory as the undervalued corner of the AI supply chain relative to everything else that has re-rated on data center spend. Fine. But "Temasek thinks memory is cheap" is a far thinner catalyst than "Temasek is about to print a bid," and the second one is what got paid.

The Premium Is the Position

This perp settles against the Nasdaq ADS, and that distinction is carrying most of the risk right now. Each SKHY ADS represents one-tenth of a Seoul common share. SK hynix's KRX line last closed at ₩1,587,000. At roughly ₩1,417 to the dollar, that puts the arithmetically fair ADS value near $112. SKHY closed at $165.67 on the Nasdaq and printed $167.50 after hours. Call it a 48% premium to the home listing.

The gap is not new — it ran near 50% at the July 10 ADS debut and compressed toward 30% into Q2 earnings — but this week re-widened it. The Nasdaq line gained more than the Seoul line on the same headline, which is what happens when the scarce asset is US-listed access to a Korean chipmaker rather than the chipmaker itself.

The practical version for anyone holding this perp: you are long a 48% premium, not long SK hynix. Two separate things can hurt you. The stock can fall, or the premium can converge while the stock goes nowhere. The perp printed 10.82% over 13 hours against the ADS's 7.29% cash-session gain, picking up the pre-market ramp and after-hours follow-through that a closing print does not show. About $162.7 million changed hands on this HIP-3 market over 24 hours — thin next to the ADS itself, and thick enough that the basis can move fast in either direction.

Why the Bid Had Something to Land On

The Temasek story hit a stock that already had a stack of live news underneath it. On August 7, SK hynix's board approved $38.1 billion for two new fabs — a ₩35.2 trillion DRAM and HBM plant at Yongin and a ₩19.1 trillion NAND plant at Cheongju — and pulled its four-fab Yongin buildout forward to 2033 from an original 2045 target. Days later, Korean media reported the company is restarting its stalled second Dalian fab to lift China NAND output about 50%, with equipment moving in as early as November and mass production targeted for the first half of 2027. NAND contract pricing has gone near-vertical on enterprise SSD demand.

On the demand side, SK hynix sits inside SK Group's $500 billion-plus AI infrastructure partnership with Nvidia, supplying HBM4 into next-generation Vera Rubin systems.

What has not cooperated is the tape. Q2 revenue of ₩79.32 trillion and operating profit of ₩60.54 trillion were all-time records — a 76% operating margin, operating profit up 557% year over year — and they still landed under a consensus near ₩64 trillion, knocking the stock down 9.6%. The Seoul line remains roughly 47% below its ₩2,987,000 record. This week is a bounce inside a large drawdown, not a breakout to new highs.

What to Watch

The nearest hard catalyst is capital returns. Samsung and SK hynix are both expected to detail new shareholder return programs by the end of August, with combined scale reported as potentially exceeding ₩200 trillion across special dividends, buybacks and share cancellations. SK hynix closed Q2 with a ₩69.4 trillion net cash position, so the balance sheet supports it. That is a far more concrete event than a sovereign fund's reported intentions.

Second, whether Temasek says anything more specific. Continued silence lets the premise behind this move decay on its own.

Third, and most specific to this market: the ADS-versus-Seoul spread. Every prior compression in that premium came out of the Nasdaq line rather than out of Korea. A perp long at $167.50 is expressing a view on that gap whether the trader intended to or not.
