ZHIPU Round-Trips the Washout as Z.AI's Homegrown Gigawatt Bid Holds Into the Close

Z.AI's Hong Kong H-share (2513.HK) closed Tuesday up 37.11% at HK$1,221, fully recovering Monday's HK$890.50 washout, and the ZHIPU perp is up 35.71% over 22h to $154.70. The bid held into the Hong Kong close rather than fading at the open, on roughly $18M of 24h perp volume — about double the turnover behind the same rebound a session earlier. The catalyst is Z.AI's newly activated 1-gigawatt data center running entirely on Chinese-made chips, a direct answer to the compute-cost fears that cratered the stock after Moonshot's Kimi K3 launch. It is a strong recovery, but at HK$1,221 the stock still sits about 23% below the HK$1,588 where Zhipu placed $4 billion of equity two weeks ago.

Mover Brief

The Round-Trip

2513.HK closed Tuesday at HK$1,221.00, up 37.11% off Monday's HK$890.50 washout — a full recovery of the Monday leg and back above where the H-share sat right after last week's Kimi K3 crash. The ZHIPU perp marks $154.70, up 35.71% over 22h, and the key detail is that the move held into the Hong Kong close instead of fading at the open.

Volume is the tell. This market did roughly $18.1M over 24h, about double the ~$10M behind the same rebound HIPERWIRE flagged mid-morning at HK$1,010. When a perp on a thin, HKD-denominated H-share doubles its turnover into a 37% up day, that reads as participation confirming the move — not a low-liquidity air pocket getting marked around.

The Market Re-Rated the Compute Story

The engine is the same one that turned the tape overnight. On July 20, Bloomberg reported that Z.AI — the company formerly known as Zhipu, and the H-share this perp tracks — has begun partially operating a 1-gigawatt data center built entirely on Chinese-made chips, enough power for roughly 750,000 homes, now running several clusters of more than 10,000 chips each. What Tuesday's full-session bid says is that the market is treating this as a durable re-rate, not a one-headline pop.

The strategic read is straightforward. Zhipu was cut off from Nvidia after the U.S. Commerce Department added it to the export blacklist in January 2025, so proving it can stand up frontier-scale compute on domestic silicon — GLM models trained on Huawei's Ascend accelerators and MindSpore software — is the whole bull case. The same reporting puts the company on track for roughly $1 billion in annual recurring revenue after hitting its 2026 sales target this month. That is the direct rebuttal to the Kimi K3 bear thesis — that Chinese labs can't keep pace on cost and compute — and the tape spent all of Tuesday pricing it in.

HK$1,588 Is Still Overhead

For all the recovery, this is a re-rate being repaired, not a fresh high. At HK$1,221 the stock is still about 23% under the HK$1,588 where Zhipu placed roughly $4 billion of new equity on July 8, and under the pre-Kimi levels above HK$1,500. That placement price is the clean line: reclaiming it would signal the market has fully forgiven the compute scare and re-underwritten the growth story at the price institutions paid two weeks ago; stalling below it keeps this in the oversold-bounce-with-a-real-catalyst bucket.

There is structural demand underneath it, too. Zhipu formally entered the Hang Seng Tech Index in June, making passive funds forced holders, which is part of why dips keep finding bids. On a name that ran nearly 1,500% from its January IPO into the July placement, HK$1,588 is the number that decides whether this is a durable turn or a relief rally.
